Privacy & permissions

Playfull has no server and no account. Your streams and settings stay in Chrome's storage on your computer, and the only network traffic is the streams you choose to play.

Nothing about you leaves your computer

  • No accounts: there's nothing to sign in to.
  • No servers: the extension has no backend of its own to send anything to.
  • No analytics or tracking of any kind.
  • No sync: your library stays on this computer. Use a backup file to move it.

When you play a stream, your browser fetches it directly from the site that hosts it, just as it would if you opened that address yourself. The 100 suggested stations and their ratings ship inside the extension; nothing is downloaded to show them.

What's stored

In Chrome's local extension storage: your library (each stream's address, title, how it plays, whether it's switched on, and when it was added and last played), your settings, where the player windows were last left, and your theme.

In Chrome's session storage, which is cleared when the browser closes: the players open right now, and, only if you turn on Other tabs, the title and address of other tabs playing sound.

What the permissions are for

Granted at install, with no warning:

  • Storage: your streams and settings.
  • Offscreen: plays a stream from the toolbar panel with no window open.
  • Scripting: pauses and plays a web page's audio and video, and only on sites you've allowed.

Asked for only when you need them, and given back when you're done:

  • Tabs ("Read your browsing history"): asked when you turn on Other tabs, to show the title and site of tabs playing sound.
  • One site at a time: asked the first time you press pause or play on a page. It runs one small function there that pauses or resumes the page's audio and video. Nothing on the page is read, stored or sent.

The extension has no content scripts and does nothing on the sites you visit otherwise.

Removing your data

Use Settings → Resets → Reset all settings, or remove the extension from chrome://extensions. Uninstalling deletes everything it stored. There's nothing held anywhere else to delete.

If you remove the extension

When you remove Playfull from Chrome, Chrome opens a short feedback form in a new tab. Answering is optional, and you can just close the tab. The extension sends nothing to the form: the form's link only says which extension you removed. The form is hosted by Airtable, so anything you type there goes to Airtable and to us, under Airtable's privacy policy.
