Send feedback to a Google Sheet

Send feedback straight to a Google Sheet your team shares, one tab per product, project or client. The spreadsheet's owner sets it up once, in about five minutes; everyone else joins with two things the owner gives them.

Set up a spreadsheet (the owner, once)

  1. Open the Google Sheet that should collect feedback (for a new one, sheets.new) and choose Extensions → Apps Script.
  2. In Feedback Smack, open Settings → Google Sheets and click Copy script under Set up a spreadsheet. In Apps Script, select all the starter code in Code.gs, paste over it, and press Ctrl+S (⌘S on a Mac).
  3. Click Deploy → New deployment, click the gear beside Select type and choose Web app.
  4. Set Execute as: Me and Who has access: Anyone, then click Deploy.
  5. Click Authorize access and choose your account. Google warns that it hasn't verified the app, as it does for any script you write yourself: click Advanced → Go to … (unsafe), then Allow.
  6. Copy the Web app URL and join it as below.
  7. On the connected spreadsheet, Add a sheet for each product, project or client you collect feedback on. Each becomes a choice under Send to in the panel.

Join a spreadsheet

  1. Open Settings → Google Sheets and find Join a spreadsheet.
  2. Paste the Web app URL (it ends in /exec).
  3. Paste the Connection key. The owner can click Get my key, which opens the web app and shows the key to them alone; it's also under Feedback Smack → Connection key in the spreadsheet's menu.
  4. Click Connect.

The key works like a password for adding rows. It's kept on this device and in your backups, and sent only to that web app.

Why "Anyone" is safe

It means anyone can reach the web app, not read or change the spreadsheet. The web app answers only requests that carry the connection key, and shows the key only to the spreadsheet's owner. If your organization doesn't offer "Anyone", choose Anyone within your organization: then everyone sending feedback must be signed in to their work Google account in this browser.

Pictures and the attachments folder

Pictures and the HTML of picked parts are saved to a Feedback Smack attachments folder in Google Drive next to the spreadsheet, and linked from each row. Share the folder with your team if they open pictures from the sheet.

Update the script later

Paste the new version into Code.gs, then choose Deploy → Manage deployments, edit the deployment and set Version: New version. The URL and the key stay the same, so nobody has to join again.
