Turn on Ask AI (experimental)

Ask AI is a conversation with Chrome's own on-device model, running on your computer. It's off until you turn it on, and it's meant as the next step when the tools haven't explained a problem — before you contact your support team.

Before you turn it on

  • It's a large download. Chrome downloads its on-device model, about 4 GB, once. Chrome needs at least 22 GB free on the drive and a graphics card with more than 4 GB of memory, or 16 GB of memory and 4 processor cores. Use an unmetered connection.
  • It's smaller than online AI. A model that fits on your computer is more limited, and this is experimental: answers can be wrong or incomplete, so check before you act.
  • It can't change anything. It can't see your screen or act for you; it suggests a tool, and you decide.

Turn it on

  1. Click Ask AI (experimental) in the panel's Support group — while it's off, it opens the settings page at Advanced.
  2. Under AI troubleshooting (experimental), read the notes and switch on Turn on AI troubleshooting.
  3. Chrome starts the download. Settings shows how long it should take on your connection, and its progress.

Talk a problem through

Open Ask AI and pick a common problem under What's going wrong? — copy and paste, a site that won't load or sign in, a page that looks broken, an extension that may be interfering, screen sharing, a slow Chrome — or describe your own.

With Share what I've tried on, it's given what you ran with the tools this browser session and what they found, plus the site's address (never the page's content), so it starts from where you are. When it suggests a tool, it's a button; after you run it, the Back to Ask AI bar at the top returns you to the conversation with the results. Widen the panel for more room while you talk.

It stays on your computer

The model runs on your computer, and Browser Quick Fix Kit never sends what you type, or what the tools found, anywhere. The conversation is kept in the extension's local storage; the log of what you tried lives only until Chrome closes.

Turn it off and remove the model

Switching it off deletes your conversations. The extension can't delete Chrome's model itself, so Remove Chrome's on-device AI under Advanced shows the steps. Chrome may share the model with its own features and other sites, and removing it turns those off too.
